Hi! My name is Zhyrrina Caballero, and I am from the Philippines. I am a first-year student, studying BSc Economics with Accountancy. My journey to UEA and Norwich started couple of year ago when my mum moved to Norwich for her job, and I followed her here. My initial reason for choosing to study at UEA was actually the International Foundation program which the UEA, together with the INTO Centre offer. These short courses prepare international students for entry into their preferred undergraduate degrees and as I did not want to spend another two years to prepare for A-level exams, this course seemed perfect for me. I arrived at Norwich in December and immediately felt right at home.
Located just two miles from the Norwich city centre is the University of East Anglia. They constantly rank highly in university rankings and have been awarded gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, so their teaching is guaranteed to be of the highest quality. There are many useful facilities, such as an on-campus pharmacy and Medical Centre, multiple food shops, a library that is open 24/7 all year, and even a sports-centre called, Sportspark, among many other facilities and attractions. There are numerous clubs and societies, which help students socialise with other students of similar interests. There are several different types of support available for students as well. However, I did not know about most of these before starting my course at the School of Economics (ECO).
Mathematics has always been my favourite subject for as long as I can remember, so I kind of knew that I wanted a career that worked with numbers, and it felt like it was only a matter of time before I decided to study accountancy. UEA offers three different accounting courses, but I decided to go for BSc Economics with Accountancy to keep my future pathway options open. I am very satisfied with my choice thus far. All the lecturers I have met are very friendly and easy to approach. They like being asked questions and are always willing to lend a helping hand. They also offer several workshops and opportunities that will help with future employment.
Norwich isn’t too big nor too small. It isn’t London, but I personally prefer it the way it is. It has everything I want and need without losing its quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The city is also very culturally diverse. I see people of all kinds of nationalities everywhere, and there are also multiple restaurants and shops catering for different cultures. Everything just feels very welcoming and comfortable, and after a few months in Norwich, it became something like a second home to me.
I am currently in my first year, so I am still learning and discovering more things about the School and the UEA, and I am planning to take part in more activities and to gain more experiences in the future.
